Six deaths due to rains in Pune district
Pune: Six people died while 15 domestic animals perished in separate incidents during the heavy rains on Wednesday night and Thursday. Three died due to electrocution in Deccan Gymkhana. One person was killed in Mulshi in a landslide while two persons drowned in separate incidents in the Katraj and Ashtabhuja areas.
Landslides were reported in the Mulshi area in Tamhini Ghat and Lavasa. Two teams of NDRF and the Army were deployed in rescue operations. The discharge from the Khadakwasla is being monitored, said District Collector Dr Suhas Diwase.
He was addressing a press conference.
An excessive rainfall was recorded in Pune city and the district in the past two days. The Mutha river, flowing through the city, was flooded as heavy discharge was made from the Khadakwasla Dam into the river. Low-lying areas along the river suffered from the flood water. Many housing societies were inundated.
Around 2.5 TMC storage was added within a day in the Khadakwasla chain of four dams. Around 1 TMC water was released from the Khadakwasla reservoir after it was filled to its capacity, said the Water Resources Department. This led to floods in Pune. Around 4,000 citizens were shifted to safer locations.
Discharge will go up if rainfall increases: Officials
Now, the administration has shared important details about three dams around the city. The discharge from the Khadakwasla Dam was reduced to 13,981 cusecs on Friday morning. It could be changed as per the need. Citizens should observe caution, said the Executive Engineer of the Irrigation Department.
The discharge from the Lonavala Dam into the Indrayani river has been reduced to 120 cusecs. It may increase if rainfall increases. Citizens should take necessary precautions, said Mulshi Dam chief Basavraj Munnoli.
The discharge from the Kasarsai Dam was decreased to 120 cusecs. It may be further reduced or increased depending on the changing storage level, said Assistant Engineer Class I, Khadakwasla Canal Sub-division no. 2, Pune.
