Pune: Accused in Wife’s Murder Case Sentenced to Life Imprisonment After 9-Year Court Battle
Pune: On November 13, 2015, Balasaheb Janardan Chavan brutally murdered his wife, Shalan Chavan, by hitting her head with floor tiles in a dispute that arose between them over the transfer of her mother-in-law’s land to his name. Further, the accused also attempted to murder his mother-in-law, Subhadra Vitthal Bhojne.
After nine years of long hearings, finally, the session judge, K.P. Nandedkar, declared Balasaheb Chavan guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 15,000. Furthermore, in the attempted murder of his mother-in-law, he has additionally been sentenced to seven years in custody.
This heinous murder took place on November 13, 2015, in the Yewalewadi village. As per the information, Subhadra Bhojne has five acres of land on her name. However, the accused, Balasaheb Chavan, is forcing his wife, Shalan Chavan, to transfer one acre of that land to his name. Frustrated with constant disputes between them over this issue, Shalan Chavan went to her parents’ home.
One day, when Shalan was taking a shower in the home, the accused, Balasaheb Chavan, came there, and he murdered his wife by hitting her head with floor tiles. He also tried to kill Subhadra, but she narrowly escaped from his assault.
In this case, additional public prosecutor Maruti Wadekar examined 12 witnesses. In that, the testimony of both the eyewitness children of Shalan Chavan became important. Public prosecutor Maruti Wadekar also got the support of the court advocacy staff, Assistant Police Sub-Inspector Jagtap, Constable Mane, Police Constable Kengle, Assistant Police Sub-Inspector Garud, and Constable Nidhalkar.
