Pune: In a significant step towards easing traffic congestion in Pune’s Yerawada Shastri Nagar Chowk, the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Estimate Committee has approved the project plans for a flyover and a subway. Sunil Tingre, the MLA of Vadgaon Sheri, announced that the construction work is slated to begin before the upcoming assembly elections.

Speaking on it, Vadgaon Sheri MLA Sunil Tingre said, “I have been consistently advocating for a flyover and subway at Shastri Nagar Chowk to tackle the traffic issues. However, progress was delayed due to the absence of a no-objection certificate from the Department of Archaeology. Following persistent follow-up, the National Department of Archaeology finally granted approval for the flyover and subway projects in May.”

MLA Tingre further explained that Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar had instructed the municipal commissioner to expedite the planning and commencement of these projects. “The plan, with an estimated budget of Rs 97 crores for both projects, was presented for approval in the Estimate Committee meeting, and it received the green light on Wednesday,” Tingre added.

The proposed subway at Shastri Nagar Chowk will be a six-tier structure, with three lanes designated for vehicles travelling from Yerawada to Nagar Road Kharadi and another three lanes for vehicles heading towards Pune. The subway project is expected to cost Rs 37 crore.

Additionally, a two-tier flyover is planned to facilitate the movement of vehicles from Kharadi and Viman Nagar towards the golf club, with an estimated expenditure of Rs 26 crore. An additional Rs 18 crore will be allocated for other related works in the area.

These developments, along with the existing BRT route from Yerawada to Viman Nagar, are expected to bring much-needed relief to motorists. The upcoming double-decker flyover from Shirur to Ramwadi will also contribute to making city roads signal-free, significantly improving traffic flow in the future.
