Pune: Massive Anti-Encroachment Drive in Wagholi: PMRDA, Police, and Civic Bodies Clear 40,000 Sq. Ft Encroachments

On Wednesday, January 29, the Municipal Corporation, PMRDA, Public Works Department, National Highways Department, and Wagholi Police jointly conducted action and demolished about 40,000 square feet of encroachment that was obstructing traffic flow in Wagholi. In the six-hour-long action, authorities removed sheds, fences, billboards, structures, etc., from the road, which was impacting the traffic situation in Wagholi.
On Tuesday, Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar and Shirur constituency MLA Dnyaneshwar Katke took a meeting of all departmental officers to resolve the traffic congestion in Wagholi. After that, the police commissioner inspected the site and ordered immediate joint action on unauthorised establishments. Accordingly, the joint action started from Kesnand Phata on Tuesday.
The demolition drive which was started at 1 p.m. continued till 7 p.m. in the evening in which action was taken against 40,000 square feet of establishments like sheds, fences, boards, and constructions that were obstructing traffic flow. The action was carried out peacefully, and no disturbance took place while conducting it.
The authorities took all the precautions to ensure demolition action takes place without any disturbance. For this, a large police force was deployed under the leadership of Senior Police Inspector Pandit Rejitwad of the Wagholi Police Station. Further, during this action, traffic was controlled by the traffic control team under the leadership of Assistant Police Inspector Gajanan Jadhav of the Lonikand Traffic Department.
Notably, some vendors themselves had removed the encroachments since Tuesday evening. Citizens have welcomed the sudden action taken on Wednesday. The authorities informed that the next action would begin again from 8 a.m. on Thursday. Around 50 workers, employees, and officers of various departments, including a JCBS, participated in this action.
While speaking on it, Shirur MLA, Dnyaneshwar Katke, said, “There was a very serious problem of traffic congestion in Wagholi. Many encroachments were obstructing traffic. Therefore, joint action was taken on Wednesday.” He further said that citizens should not commit such encroachments. And, if it happens again, the Municipal Corporation should take immediate action on it.
