35.9 degrees Celsius: Pune’s highest temperature in January

Pune: The highest maximum temperature in January was recorded at 35.9 degrees Celsius in Shivajinagar in Pune on Wednesday (January 29). Above average temperature was reported in December as well as in January.
During the winter this year, though cold wave conditions prevailed for some weeks, the entire season witnessed frequent fluctuations in temperatures. There were mixed weather conditions in December. In January too, cloudy, chilly weather was witnessed. Therefore, average temperature remained above normal in January.
The highest temperature recorded in the past decade ranged between 30 to 34 degrees Celsius. In 2016, a maximum temperature of 34.4 degrees Celsius was recorded. The highest temperatures reported in January was above 35 deg C in 2009: 35.3 deg C on January 27 and 35.2 deg C on January 26, 2009.
In this backdrop, Shivajinagar recorded the highest ever maximum temperature in the city in January on Wednesday. The entire month had warm weather.
According to IMD Scientist SD Sanap, chilly winds blowing from the North stopped. Therefore, cold weather conditions receded in January. An anti-cyclonic system increased temperature. Thus, the highest maximum temperature in January was recorded in Pune.
