Pune: The police arrested Dattatraya Gade, the accused in the Swargate bus stand rape case, from his native Gunat village in Shirur taluka at 1.30 am on Friday.

The Swargate Police conducted the operation. Gade would be produced before the court on Friday afternoon.

Earlier, he made a big claim before the police. He is currently lodged in the lock-up of the Lashkar Police Station. He was interrogated. Joint CP Ranjan Kumar Sharma and DCP Smartana Patil arrived at the police station. Senior police officials are interrogating him.

According to the details received, Gade was crying in police custody. He said, “I was wrong. I committed a sin.” He also claimed that he did not rape her. They had a consensual physical relationship.

The arrest episode

The police got a tip-off that Gade was hiding in a sugarcane field. Over 100 policemen arrived at the village with a drone and a sniffer dog to search for the culprit. After searching for Gade in 25 acres of fields, the operation was halted. Meanwhile, Gade was going thirsty and hungry.

He went to a house at midnight and sought water to drink. The woman immediately called up the police. But Gade escaped from there and hid in a ditch near the canal. The police gheraoed the accused. Villagers spoke with him and forced him to surrender. Then he surrendered and was arrested.
