Crime against women : 56 rapes in 40 days, 125 molestations in Pune
Pune: There has been a huge increase in assaults against women in the city. A 26-year-old woman was raped in a bus at the Swaragte bus stand a couple of days ago. A cab driver did an obscene act in front of a woman IT engineer travelling in his vehicle recently.
A young woman was raped in Bopdev Ghat a few months ago. Citizens are expressing anger over such frequent incidents. Doubts are being raised about women’s security. Statistics revealed rising offences against women in the city.
According to the statistics, 410 sexual assaults on women were reported while 738 molestation cases were registered in the city in 2023. In 2024, 505 rape cases were filed while 866 molestations took place. In over a month this year, 56 rapes and 125 molestation incidents happened in Pune.
This reveals how the cultural capital is turning into the capital of crime against women. It remains to be seen when the police will curb such neurotic incidents and when they will arrest culprits.
