PMC to Appoint Female Security Guards on PMPML School Buses for Student Safety

Pune :
After the Swargate ST Bus Stand rape incident on a 26-year-old woman, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has also sprung into action along with police officials and started exploring strong measures for its citizens safety. In a commendable move, the PMC has decided to appoint female security guards in the buses of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd. (PMPML), which transports students from Pune Municipal Corporation schools, for safety reasons.
The Municipal Corporation has taken this decision for the safe transportation of students coming to Pune Municipal Corporation schools by bus. As per the new rules, every bus transporting students will have a female security guard in it, and this rule will be implemented in the next few days.
Earlier, the state government made it mandatory for private school buses and school vans to appoint female assistants in the school buses, prioritising the girl’s safety. However, this rule was not applicable to PMPML buses that transport students in municipal schools. Therefore, the municipal corporation has started taking steps to appoint female security guards in PMPML buses to ensure safe transportation of students.
As per the information, there are about 200 to 300 buses of PMPML that transport students to and from municipal schools in Pune city, and a large number of students travel through these buses while going to schools. Therefore, the PMC has taken this decision, prioritising their safety.
In this regard, the Additional Commissioner of the Pune Municipal Corporation, Prithviraj B.P., informed that this decision has been taken after consulting the officials of the Municipal Corporation’s Education Board as well as officials from various departments of the Municipal Administration. He said, “The Municipal Corporation aims to ensure the safety of students studying in the municipal schools. Therefore, female security guards will be appointed in PMPML buses transporting students.
