Pune : In India, it is a legal crime to possess and sell elephant hair. In spite of this, a jeweller from Pune made jewellery from elephant hair and sold it through the advertisement. Therefore, the Vishrambaug Police have registered a complaint against a jeweller, V.R. Ghodke Jeweller, Busyland building, Kumthekar Road in this case.

The Wildlife Warden, Aditya Vivek Paranjape, informed that it is a tradition in parts of Africa and Asia and some other cultures to wear elephant hair in the thumb, also known as elephant hair bangles. Many believe that wearing elephant hair gives the wearer strength and protection. As the elephant is a powerful animal, it is believed that wearing his hair gives strength to the person.

Further, elephant hair in a ring or bracelet represents bravery and strength. People also believe that being black in colour, the elephant’s hair keeps away the evil forces. So it is suggested for children who have frequent nightmares and who are affected by the bad vibrations of others.

In spite of these beliefs and traditions, the sale or possession of elephant hair is prohibited under the Wildlife Protection Act in India.

A few days ago, Aditya Paranjape heard an advertisement of Ghodke Jewellers on the radio. Further, he also saw the advertisement of the jeweller selling the jewellery of an elephant hair on the internet. Accordingly, Paranjape sent one individual to the jewellers, posing him as a customer to make sure of the product. The customer then purchased a silver ring made up of elephant hair.

When Paranjape examined the ring, he really found elephant hair inside the ring. After that, he met the Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandip Singh Gill, Senior Police Inspector of Vishrambaug Police Station Vijaymala Pawar, and Crime Inspector Ghodke and told them all the incidents. After that, police registered a case against the jeweller and seized gold and silver rings, bracelets, necklaces, and bangles made up of elephant hair. Police Sub-Inspector Phartade is conducting further investigation in this case.
