Pune: A new record of maximum temperature was set in April this year in the city. Shivajinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 40 degrees Celsius and above consecutively for 13 days.

The mercury reached 40 degrees Celsius and above for 11 days in 2016, for 12 days in 2019, once in 2015, for 11 days in 2016, six days in 2017, two days in 2018, 12 days in 2019, one day in 2020, seven days in 2022, one day in 2023 and seven days in 2024. However, maximum temperature never went above 40 deg C in 2021.

Thus, the record was broken in April this year after 40 degrees Celsius and above maximum day temperature was reported for 13 consecutive days.

Warm weather conditions started building up from the second week of April. Maximum and minimum temperatures rose in April. Sweltering heat was experienced throughout April. Temperature has been above normal in Pune in this summer season. Hot winds blowing from the North and dry weather conditions could have added up to warm weather.

Met Scientist SD Sanap said, “There are no concrete reasons why a maximum temperature of 40 degrees Celsius and above was recorded this year in April. Fluctuations in temperatures are normal.”

Sanap said that maximum temperature will remain around 40 degrees Celsius for the next 3-4 days. It may decrease from May 4. Moisture in the air is likely to increase and the sky would remain cloudy.
