BJP leadership names Devendra Fadnavis as new Chief Minister
Mumbai: The suspense over the Chief Ministership seems to be over. The top leadership of the BJP learnt to have appointed Devendra Fadnavis as the new Chief Minister.
BJP MLAs were insisting that Fadnavis should become the CM while the Shiv Sena (BT) MLAs demanded that Eknath Shinde should continue to serve as the Chief Minister. After prolonged negotiations in Delhi, Devendra Fadnavis’s name was finalised, said sources.
Some news channels reported the development but its official confirmation was not given. Fadnavis served as the Chief Minister from 2014 to 2019. Later, he took an oath as the CM in 2019, along with Ajit Pawar as his deputy. However, that government did not last long. Sources said that Fadnavis would be sworn in as the Chief Minister for the third time.
According to details, 10 BJP MLAs will also be sworn in as ministers while six from the Shiv Sena (BT) and four from the NCP (AP) will also be administered the oath of office. The BJP won the highest number of seats (132) in the recent State elections. Small parties and independents (five MLAs) supported the BJP. The Shiv Sena (BT) won 57 and the NCP (AP) got 41 seats.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde resigned from his post. The process to dissolve the 14th State Assembly started. The Governor has asked Shinde to work as the caretaker CM till the new government is sworn in.
