Pune / Pimpri:

In a commendable act, two women police officers demonstrated exemplary courage and presence of mind when a pregnant woman in labour sought their help at Wakad Naka on Sunday around 4 PM. With the ambulance and doctor delayed, the female police officers assisted in delivering the baby themselves. The woman safely gave birth to a healthy baby. Recognising their prompt action, Police Commissioner Vinoy Kumar Choubey honoured the two female officers for their timely assistance.

Two names of two female police officers are Police Ammaldar Neelam Chavan and Reshma Shaikh. Neelam Chavan and Reshma Shaikh, who are posted in the Hinjewadi Traffic Division, were on duty at Wakad Naka on Sunday. At around 4 p.m., Rajshree Madhav Waghmare (age 25) was going to Aundh Hospital for her delivery. Suddenly, she started having labour pains at Wakad Naka. The labour pains were so severe that she could not do anything by herself.

Showing presence of mind, Neelam Chavan and Reshma Shaikh rushed to the woman. They called 108 for an ambulance. However, it would take time for an ambulance to arrive. So they took her to a room on the roadside. Reshma Shaikh then immediately called her acquaintance Dr. Dhananjay Jadhav and informed him about the incident over the phone. As per his advice, the two of them delivered Rajshree safely.

Rajshree gave birth to a cute baby. Since there was nothing to cut the baby’s umbilical cord, Dr. Jadhav advised applying forceps 10 to 12 centimetres from the baby’s belly. But there were no forceps. Then, on his advice, the mother’s saree was torn and tied to the baby’s umbilical cord. After this, an ambulance arrived half an hour later. The woman and her child were then admitted to Aundh Hospital, and the doctors said that both the woman and her child are fine.

For their exemplary courage, Reshma Shaikh and Neelam Chavan were felicitated by Police Commissioner Vinoy Kumar Choubey. At this time, Joint Commissioner of Police Dr. Shashikant Mahavarkar, Additional Commissioner of Police Vasant Pardeshi, Deputy Commissioner of Police Bapu Bangar, and Senior Police Inspector of Hinjewadi Traffic Branch Prasad Gokule were present.
