Central government team arrives in Pune but returns without testing water, citizens upset

Pune: The central government’s team of the Union Health Ministry arrived in the city following rising cases of Guillain–Barré Syndrome (GBS). However, the team returned without checking water from wells and other sources in Nanded, which led to confusion among citizens.

According to the details received, citizens have panicked. Some local residents said the disease is caused due to contaminated water. They demanded that the central team should check water from the wells. But the team did not test water, which upset citizens.

Then local residents blocked the way of the team and insisted on checking water samples. They expressed strong resentment over the civic administration’s negligence in this regard. Neither the civic body nor the Health Department have issued any clarification in this regard. But pressure is growing to take action against the administration.

GBS symptoms

GBS is a rare neurological disorder, which gets cured. Immunity is reduced after its attack on neurons in an affected person. The neck, eyes and face of a patient become weak. Body parts become numb while in serious cases, walking becomes difficult. An affected person finds it difficult to swallow food. There can also be difficulty in breathing.

Main symptoms

*Weak limbs, difficulty in walking, numbness, dysentery

Measures to be taken

*Boil and filter water before drinking

*If not sure about water, drink packaged drinking water

*Wash vegetables, fruits before eating

*Cook poultry, meat properly

*Avoid raw or half-cooked food, particularly eggs and seafood

*Wash hands after visiting the toilet and before eating

*Avoid unhygienic conditions outside
