Feeding pigeons costs dearly in Pune
Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been appealing to citizens to not feed food grain to pigeons, failing which a penalty will be recovered from them. However, the birds are still fed.
The civic body recovered fines amounting to Rs 28,000 in 37 cases from December 1 to 18. This was revealed by PMC Solid Waste Management Department Head and Deputy Municipal Commissioner Sandeep Kadam.
Germs, viruses and feathers in droppings of pigeons cause infections of lungs. Some citizens still feed pigeons in open spaces. In areas such as Kothrud, Warje Malwadi, river bed areas such as Ashtabhuja Ghat and Nene Ghat, Swargate, Sarasbaug such practices are prevalent, where the penalty is being recovered from violators.
Municipal Commissioner Dr Rajendra Bhosale has ordered the Solid Waste Department to penalise citizens for feeding pigeons at public places. Pigeon droppings cause ‘Hyper Sensitive Pneumonia’, which is a respiratory tract illness. Its rate of incidence is 60-65 pc. Therefore, the civic body has been appealing to citizens to not feed pigeons.
