Guillain-Barre Syndrome claims third victim in Pune, 130 cases detected, 20 on ventilator support

Pune: Another patient affected by Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) has succumbed to the disease. The victim, a 65-year-old woman from Nandedgaon, died at the Sassoon Hospital. She was being treated for the past 15 days.

However, her condition worsened and she died. It was learnt that Nandedgaon has the highest number of cases in Pune. This is the third death due to GBS and the fourth in the State.

Health Department issues an alert

The number of GBS patients is growing and has reached 130, out of which 20 are on ventilator support. The State Health Department has advised citizens to not get panicked but to take necessary precautions. Since the infection is caused due to contaminated water and food, citizens should boil and filter drinking water and maintain hygiene.

What is GBS?

It is a rare disease. The immune system of an affected person attacks their nervous system. This weakens one’s limbs and one gets tingling sensations. It can also lead to stroke in some cases.

Precautionary measures

*Boil, filter water and drink it after cooling it

*Clean and cooked food should be consumed

*In case of symptoms, contact the doctor immediately

The growing number of GBS patients is concerning. The Health Department has appealed to citizens to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
