Pune: The Hindu Garjana Chashak Women’s and Men’s State-level Wrestling Contests, organised jointly by the Hindu Garjana Pratishthan and Punit Balan Group (PBG), kicked off in the city on Friday (January 7).

Wrestlers from Pimpri-Chinchwad, Baramati, Maval, Haveli, Shirur, Mulshi, Indapur, Daund, Purandar, Bhor, Velhe, including Pune, are participating in the tournaments.

The competitions are held in cooperation with the Shikshan Prasarak Mandali and with recognition from the Maharashtra Kustigir Sangh and the Pune Zilha Kustigir Sangh. In the junior categories, 274 pugilists are taking part in under-14, 199 in under-17 while 198 pugilists have been registered in the senior category, 60 in women’s category, 35 in open junior category, 76 in the open senior category and 27 in the women’s open category.

Bouts in the under-14 category were played in the morning session at the SP College ground on Tilak Road. A grand stadium has been set up, where two mud wrestling arenas are located in the centre surrounded by the viewers’ gallery, which can accommodate 10,000 people. A big parking space has been provided near the stadium. All participating wrestlers have been provided lodging and boarding, said PBG President Punit Balan and Hindu Garjana Pratishthan President Dheeraj Ghate.

DyCM Ajit Pawar will inaugurate the tournaments at 6 pm in the evening session. State Higher and Technical Minister Chandrakant Patil and State Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Dattatraya Bharne will be present.
