Pune: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday (February 8) witnessed the Hindu Garjana Chashak State-level Wrestling Competitions for Women and Men organised by Hindu Garjana Pratishthan and Punit Balan Group (PBG).
Fadnavis said, “A proper programme of wrestling should be prepared with the help of experts from the field in the State. I hope that Maharashtra should be leading in medal tallies at the international level in the future Asiad Games, Olympics, Commonwealth Games and World Cup.”
PBG President Punit Balan and Hindu Garjana Pratishthan President Dheeraj Ramchandra Ghate felicitated Hon. Devendra Fadnavis. A special felicitation was held at the hands of the Chief Minister of the First Winner of Maharashtra Kesari Title – Raghunath Pawar, Maharashtra Kesari 2025 Winner Prithviraj Mohol and the Coach of the Team winning the First Kho-Kho World Cup and Puneite Shirin Godbole, Shiv Chhatrapati Awardee Suyash Gargate and Aditya Ganpule.
Shri Devendra Fadnavis enjoyed a thrilling bout involving pugilist Sikandar Shaikh. Shri Fadnavis also paid tributes to Dheeraj Ghate’s elder brother the Late Dhananjay Ghate.
Addressing wrestlers, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “Wrestling has been a popular sport in India and Maharashtra since the ancient age. It has a traditional heritage. The State and Pune district are known as the wrestlers’ district. Today, we honoured the first Maharashtra Kesari title winner, Raghunath Pawar. We should take this legacy forward, for which such huge wrestling tournaments should be held across the State.
“The State Government, in recent years, launched many schemes for wrestling and wrestlers. We are making every effort to ensure that a growing number of wrestlers participate at the national, state and district level competitions. Medals are not won by wrestlers from the State in the international contests. We should ponder over what needs to be done in that direction and how the best training can be provided for them. The State Government will take lead in this regard.
“Hence, a proper programme should be prepared for wrestling with the help of experts. I hope that Maharashtra should be leading in medal tallies at the international level in the future Asiad Games, Olympics, Commonwealth Games and World Cup.”
