Excellent wrestlers can be produced through wrestling competitions: State Higher and Technical Minister Chandrakant Patil

Pune: Hindu Garjana Chashak Women’s and Men’s State-level Wrestling Competitions, jointly organised by the Hindu Garjana Pratishthan and Punit Balan Group (PBG), was inaugurated in a grand ceremony on Friday (January 7).

Expressing the confidence that the State can excel in the sport, State Higher and Technical Minister Chandrakant Patil said, “If such huge wrestling competitions are held in every district of the State, we will definitely produce excellent wrestlers.”

State Higher and Technical Minister Chandrakant Patil inaugurated the state-level contests. He was speaking on the occasion. State Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Dattatraya Bharne, PBG President Punit Balan, Hindu Garjana Pratishthan President Dheeraj Ghate, Shikshan Prasarak Mandali President SK Jain, SP College President Keshav Vaze and Hind Kesari Amol Buchade were present.

“DyCM Ajit Pawar could not attend the ceremony due to his busy schedule,” said Hon. Chandrakant Patil, and added: “Hon. Dheerajdada has been organising wrestling competitions for the past four years. In spite of a tragedy in his family, he is concerned that wrestlers’ future should not be adversely affected and is busy organising the contests, where over 900 wrestlers are participating.

“Shri Punitdada Balan is supporting him. Hence, such a grand tournament is being held. It reflects the reputation Shri Punitdada Balan has earned over the years. Many awards and prizes will be distributed to winners in this contest. I am also a wrestler from Kolhapur and am tempted to participate in it due to attractive prizes in this competition.”

Guiding the audience, State Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Dattatraya Bharne said, “This competition has provided a rightful forum for wrestlers. It is a matter of pride that women wrestlers are participating in it. Being the State Sports Minister, I promise that I will always back outstanding players from the State for the State’s and the country’s sake.”

Bharne recalled that he also tried his wrestling skills during his formative years in Pune and used to visit Chinchechi Talim for training in the sport.

The tournaments are being held in cooperation with the Shikshan Prasarak Mandali and have been recognised by the Maharashtra Kustigir Sangh and the Pune Zilha Kustigir Sangh. In the junior categories, 274 pugilists are participating in under-14, 199 in under-17 while 198 pugilists are taking part in the senior category, 60 in women’s category, 35 in open junior category, 76 in the open senior category and 27 in the women’s open category.

Pugilists from Pimpri-Chinchwad, Baramati, Maval, Haveli, Shirur, Mulshi, Indapur, Daund, Purandar, Bhor, Velhe, including Pune, are competing in the contests.

Bouts in the under-14 category were played in the morning session at the SP College ground on Tilak Road. A huge stadium has been set up, where two mud wrestling arenas are located in the centre surrounded by the spectators’ gallery, which can accommodate 10,000 people. A big parking space has been provided near the stadium. All participating men and women wrestlers have been provided lodging and boarding.
