Lawyers and Brother of the Accused Datta Gade Took Press Conference; Seek Police Protection Amidst Death Threats

Today, the brother of Dattatreya Gade, accused in the Swargate ST stand rape case in Pune, and the accused’s lawyers, Wajid Khan and Sajid Shah, held a press conference in Pune. In this press conference, the accused’s lawyers demanded police protection for them. Advocate Wajid Khan said that as they were representing the accused in this case, they were getting life threats on their phone calls and messages.
Khan said, “The court will decide whether the accused is guilty or not. However, just because we are representing the accused in this case, we are getting life threats on our phone. Various reels are being posted on social media in this regard. Therefore, we need police protection.” The advocate further stated that the situation has deteriorated to the point where it raises the question of whether a lawyer henceforth should defend a rape accused or not.
At this time, the brother of the accused, Dattatray Gade, informed that the accused, Datta Gade, sells vegetables in the vegetable market at Gultekdi. The incident happened while the accused was returning home after selling his vegetables. His brother said, “We have complete faith in the police system and the judiciary. The victim woman with whom the incident happened should also get justice. We will accept the verdict given by the court. Even if the court gives a death sentence to Datta Gade, we will accept it. We will not feel bad about it at all.”
However, at the same time, the brother of the accused also demanded a thorough investigation into this matter. He also expressed his disappointment over media trialling of the accused. He said, “For the last three days, the media only showed one side of the coin. However, they should also show the other side of the case to the people.”
He said that after the incident, the villager’s attitude had completely changed towards their family, and the villagers had not been in any mood to keep any contact with the accused’s family.
On the reporter’s question about the criminal background of the accused Datta Gade, his brother said that he was aware of the cases registered against Datta Gade and informed that out of the six cases registered against him, the court has acquitted him in one case.
The accused’s brother stated that he had distanced himself from him due to his criminal behaviour. Further, taking a firm stance on the case, he asserted that if his brother was found guilty, he should be duly punished even if he is his brother.
