Nashik-based retired professor kills wife, dies by suicide

Nashik: A retired professor strangled his 76-year-old wife to death saying, ‘I cannot stand her suffering, I love my wife very much. Therefore, I am freeing her from her suffering…’

Later, the retired professor hanged himself to death. The incident came to light in the Jail Road area in Nashik on Wednesday (April 9). The deceased have been identified as Lata Murlidhar Joshi and Murlidhar Ramchandra Joshi (80).

According to the details received, the Joshis were staying in the Jail Road area for the past several years. Their two sons have been staying in Mumbai with their families. Their sons, along with their families, would visit their parents in Nashik. They would also take their parents to Mumbai.

Lata Joshi was bed-ridden due to an illness for the past 3-4 years. A domestic help used to look after her. The woman used to stay with the Joshis. On Wednesday evening, their domestic help went out for some work when Murlidhar Joshi killed his wife and then hanged himself to death.

Murlidhar Joshi left a suicide note, which read, ‘I love my wife very much. I am freeing her from her illness…’ The police rushed to the spot after learning about the incident and conducted the panchnama. The bodies were sent for a post-mortem. An offence was registered at the Upnagar Police Station. The police were investigating further.
