Pune: The Traffic Police conducted nakabandi operations at various chowks (crossroads) across the city to curb accidents during night. The operations continued for 45 days from May 21 to July 8, during which 1,58,269 actions were taken against violators and penalties amounting to Rs 12,21,93,550 (over Rs 12.21 crore) were collected.
Action was taken against 1,232 drunk drivers. Moreover, 4,522 people were penalized for drunk and drive, rash driving, missing number plate, triple seat, and wrong side during the first week of July 2024.
The Traffic Police have started taking stringent action against people driving under the influence of alcohol after the hit-and-run case in Kalyani Nagar. The police raised checkpoints at 20 places across the city and penalised thousands of drivers.
Cases were registered against violators. Penalties amounting to Rs 49,79,950 were recovered within 24 hours on July 7-8 from 7,549 people for violating provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. Moreover, action was taken against 1,684 people during January 1, 2024 to June 30, 2024.
Despite continuous action against drunk driving by the Pune Police, the number of violators has not reduced. Therefore, more stringent measures will be taken against drunk driving, including suspension of licence for three months. If the offence is repeated, then the driving licence will be cancelled permanently. For this, the police will take the help of the Regional Transport Office (RTO), said DCP (Traffic) Rohidas Pawar.
