Protest over controversial remarks against Balasaheb Thorat’s daughter in Sangamner
Sangamner: A controversial statement about former State Minister and Congress MLA Balasaheb Thorat’s daughter triggered outrage in Sangamner of Ahilyanagar district on Friday (October 25).
A protest was launched by Thorat supporters, most of them were women, in front of the Sangamner Taluka Police Station on Friday night and it continued till Saturday morning.
A four-wheeler was burnt and some other vehicles were damaged while Sujay Vikhe Patil’s posters were torn apart at some places. Tension prevailed on Saturday too.
The protestors demanded that BJP leader Vasantrao Deshmukh, who made the purported statement against Jayashree Thorat, should be immediately detained and brought to the police station. Jayashree is Balasaheb Thorat’s daughter and the Founder of Ekvira Foundation.
The controversial remarks were made in the Yuva Sankalp Melava (A gathering of youths) at Dhandarphal Budruk in Sangamner. The gathering was organised by supporters of BJP leader and former MP Sujay Vikhe Patil. It was presided over by Vasantrao Deshmukh.
Cases were registered at the Sangamner Taluka Police Station. The protest started on Friday (October 25) night and continued till Saturday morning. Slogans were being raised against Sujay Vikhe Patil and Vasantrao Deshmukh.
Thorat supporters gathered in a large number at the market place at Dhandarphal Budruk late night on Friday. Most of them were women. Earlier, Vasantrao Deshmukh delivered a speech in Sujay Vikhe Patil’s gathering. Women alleged that Deshmukh made objectionable remarks against Jayashree Thorat.
Women became aggressive
Supporters of MLA Balasaheb Thorat occupied the stage till late night on Friday, where Vikhe Patil’s programme was held. They raised slogans against Vikhe Patil and Deshmukh. Protesting women demanded that Deshmukh should be brought to the police station, where they later shifted and agitated.
Vehicles damaged, torched
Posters of Vikhe Patil set up in the Akole Naka area were torn apart. A four-wheeler was torched while some other vehicles were damaged by an angry mob.
