Pune: As many as 16 tourists, including five children, were injured in an attack by honeybees at Shivneri Fort at around 9.30 am on Sunday (April 20). The incident took place near Shivai Devi temple. Most of the injured were from Jalna, Pune and Shrivardhan.

It was the fourth such attack in the past two months at the fort. Honeybees gathered at a water stream due to the scorching sun. Some tourists from Mumbai were carrying the smell of a perfume, which upset the honeybees and they attacked the tourists. Employees of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) helped some victims, who ran towards the foothills, to climb down.

Junnar Rescue Team members Rajkumar Chavan, Atik Sayyad, and Mahendra Navale rushed to the fort with an ambulance after learning about the incident.

ASI employee Gokul Dabhade brought a woman and two children, who were stung by the honeybees, to the foothills. They were taken to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Government Hospital in Junnar. This was revealed by sources from the Forest Department.
