Pune: 181 lives saved through 70 deceased donor organs in Pune in 2024
Pune: The Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) Pune has said that 70 deceased donor organs were registered in Pune in 2024, which surpassed the earlier 63 deceased donor organs in 2018 and 2019. In all, 1,355 lives were saved through 557 deceased donor organs that were reported at the ZTCC in the past 20 years after its formation.
ZTCC Pune Chairman Dr AG Huprikar said, “The ZTCC Pune heartily thanks doctors and coordinators for their unshakable devotion. Grief has transformed into hope due to their kind efforts in counselling and supporting families of deceased donors. This has become a source of inspiration for many to work towards organ donation. As many as 181 lives could be successfully saved due to such inspiring decisions.”
A valuable support for organ transplant was provided by government hospitals. Seven deceased donor organs were conducted through public health services. They included one at the Sassoon Hospital and six at the Command Hospital. This indicates a growing awareness and commitment in the public sector towards providing support to organ donation. Initiatives such as ‘Green Corridor’ have been implemented after the formation of the ZTCC. This facilitates speedy transport of organs, which saves people’s lives. This has spread awareness about organ donation on a large scale.
Citizens from various walks of life took a step to donate organs this year. They included film producers, journalists, medical professionals, pilots and entrepreneurs. This indicates their social responsibility. The ZTCC has been constantly experimenting in their efforts in organ transplant in the interest of citizens. Thus, it was successful in saving 1,355 lives through 557 deceased donor organs in the past 20 years.
In 2024, the ZTCC received 70 deceased donor organs, which resulted in 181 organ transplants within the Pune Zone. They included 93 kidneys, 58 livers, six hearts, four kidneys and pancreas, one heart and lung and 14 lungs.
