Pune: After High Court Reinstation, Dr. Ajit Ranade Steps Down as Gokhale Institute Vice-Chancellor

Pune:
For the past few months, the controversy regarding the appointment of Dr. Ajit Ranade as the vice chancellor of Gokhale Institute has been in great discussion. Initially being disqualified for the post, later Ranade was reinstated as the vice chancellor of Gokhale Institute by the Bombay High Court. However, after a few days of this decision, Dr. Ranade has resigned from his post.
Today, Dr. Ranade has resigned from the post of Vice-Chancellor. He has given his resignation letter to Dr. Sanjiv Sanyal, the Chancellor of Gokhale Institute.
In his resignation, Ranade wrote that he was resigning from the post of vice chancellor for personal reasons. He also thanked the Board of Management, Servants of India Society, Faculty and Staff, Students, and all other stakeholders of the university for giving him the opportunity to lead the Gokhale Institute for two and a half years. He said that he wishes the institute to achieve excellence in the future.
He also stated in his resignation letter that his resignation does not in any way indicate any lapse or disqualification for his appointment as Vice-Chancellor of the Institute in 2021.
Earlier, multiple complaints were made against Dr. Ranade, stating that he did not have the necessary qualifications for the post of Vice-Chancellor at the time of his appointment. Acting on this complaint, the then Chancellor Dr. Bibek Debroy appointed a fact-finding committee and decided to cancel the appointment of Dr. Ranade as per the committee’s recommendation.
Dr. Ranade then challenged that decision in the Bombay High Court, in which the high court gave relief to Dr. Ranade, putting a stay on Dr. Debroy’s decision. After that, Dr. Debroy resigned from the post of Chancellor. After senior economist Dr. Sanjeev Sanyal was appointed as Chancellor, he informed the court that he was withdrawing the letter of action against Dr. Ranade. After that, the controversy was over.
However, suddenly, Dr. Ranade gave his resignation today to Dr. Sanjiv Sanyal, the Chancellor of Gokhale Institute.
