Pune: Deputy Chief Minister and Guardian Minister of Pune district, Ajit Pawar, emphasised the concerted efforts being made by both the central and state governments to alleviate the city’s traffic woes through the construction of new roads and flyovers. Speaking at the inauguration of a newly constructed flyover at Rajaram Bridge Chowk on Sinhagad Road, Pawar underscored the significance of infrastructural development to improve the daily lives of Pune’s residents.
The event was attended by several notable figures, including Rajya Sabha MP Medha Kulkarni, MLAs Bhimrao Tapkir and Madhuri Misal, Chairperson of the State Women’s Commission Rupali Chakankar, Pune Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale, Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P., and Chief Engineer Yuvraj Deshmukh.
Efforts to Secure Funding for State Development
Pawar highlighted the ongoing initiatives by the state government to secure substantial funding from the central government for the state’s development. “A vast number of projects are currently underway in Maharashtra, led by the Road Development Corporation. To expedite these projects, a control room has been established in the Deputy Chief Minister’s office,” he said. He also stressed the need for coordination among various bodies, including the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporations, the Maharashtra State Industrial Corporation, and the Pune Metropolitan Development Authority.
Discussing the ongoing infrastructural developments, Pawar noted that the Metro network is being expanded across Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, promising to significantly ease travel within the city.
Addressing Traffic Congestion and Infrastructural Challenges.
Pawar acknowledged that Pune’s growing population has exacerbated issues related to infrastructure, particularly in water supply and transportation, leading to significant inconvenience for residents. He assured that the administration is actively working to resolve these issues. “Our goal is to ensure that Pune’s citizens can access reliable facilities, avoid traffic jams, and reach their destinations on time. A review meeting will be held soon to discuss solutions for the ongoing traffic congestion,” Pawar said.
He also addressed the issue of flooding on Sinhagad Road due to water releases from Khadakwasla Dam, stating that plans are being made to construct a permanent road in the affected areas to prevent future disruptions. Additionally, Pawar emphasised the importance of responsible construction practices, urging those in the construction sector not to dispose of waste in riverbeds, as it could obstruct the natural flow of the river.
Inaugurating the First Phase of the Rajaram Bridge Flyover
The newly inaugurated flyover at Rajaram Bridge Chowk marks a significant step in Pune’s infrastructural development. “The first phase of this flyover is now open, and we are working diligently to complete the second phase as soon as possible,” Pawar stated. He added that the flyover’s opening on Independence Day is a unique gift from the government to Pune’s citizens.
Empowerment of Women through the Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana
Pawar also highlighted the success of the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana. He said that nearly 35 lakh women have received Rs 3,000 each in their bank accounts for the July and August months. The state government is striving to extend this benefit to 50 lakh women in the coming days. “This initiative has brought a sense of satisfaction to women across the state,” Pawar remarked. A state-level benefit transfer program under this scheme is scheduled to take place in Balewadi on August 17.
MLA Madhuri Misal, who also spoke at the event, reiterated the administration’s commitment to reducing traffic congestion and improving the city’s infrastructure. “The construction of the Sinhagad Road bridge aims to minimise inconvenience to citizens and alleviate traffic jams. Additionally, the necessary pillars for the future Metro line passing through this area have already been completed. The administration and elected representatives will continue to work together to provide essential infrastructure facilities to Pune’s residents,” Misal assured.
Pune Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosle provided details on the new flyover, noting that it spans 520 meters between Rajaram Bridge and Funtime Cinema on Sinhagad Road. “This flyover is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in the area, saving both fuel and time for commuters. The remaining work on the bridge is progressing well and will be completed soon,” Dr. Bhosle stated.
