Pune: Ajit Pawar leaving Baramati? May contest from Shirur seat
Pune: Preparations are underway by all political parties in the State. A big development has taken place in State politics. Quoting sources, a Marathi news channel has reported that NCP (AP) President and DyCM Ajit Pawar will contest from the Shirur Assembly segment and not from his home turf, the Baramati constituency.
Interviews of potential candidates are being conducted in all parties in the State, including the two major alliances, the Maha Yuti and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). The BJP has not interviewed aspirants from the Shirur seat. The segment is likely to be allotted to the NCP (AP). This indicates that Ajit Pawar is most likely to contest from the Shirur State Assembly seat.
Ajit Pawar won from Baramati with a huge margin from 1991 to 2019. However, the situation has changed in Baramati. Earlier, Ajit Pawar indicated that he would not fight from Baramati. In this backdrop, it is being discussed that he would contest from the Shirur seat.
Sitting Shirur MLA Ashok Pawar belongs to the NCP (SP). After a split in the NCP in July 2023, all MLAs from Pune district joined the NCP (AP) led by Ajit Pawar. However, Ashok Pawar was the only MLA from the district, who has been supporting Sharad Pawar.
It will be interesting to see who will be fielded from both alliances from the Baramati segment if Ajit Pawar files his nominations from Shirur.
