Pune: Chief Minister Eknath Shinde Orders Immediate Flood Relief Measures in Pune
Pune: Due to the recent rains and floods in Pune, citizens have faced significant hardships. In response, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has reviewed the flood situation and issued directives aimed at preventing a recurrence of such events. During a meeting held at Varsha with MNS chief Raj Thackeray, Shinde instructed the construction of a robust flood protection wall at Khadakwasla, Ekta Nagar, and Sinhagad as a temporary solution. He also directed the Pune Collector, Pune Municipal Corporation, and Water Resources Department to prepare a comprehensive plan for the permanent rehabilitation of citizens residing in the Blue Line area, in consultation with experts.
The review meeting was prompted by a delegation led by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) President Raj Thackeray, who brought the plight of flood-affected citizens to the Chief Minister’s attention. Shinde emphasised the need for coordinated efforts to address the flood crisis and ensure the safety of residents.
Pune Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosle reported that approximately 3 lakh houses in Ekta Nagar and Sinhagad are located within the Blue Line and have been there for many years. In light of this, Shinde directed that redevelopment work be carried out by granting special status to these areas and preparing a detailed plan for their rehabilitation.
Deepak Kapoor, Principal Secretary of Water Resources, informed that adequate notice had been given to all concerned agencies before releasing water from Khadakwasla Dam. Dr. Bhosle highlighted the prompt relief and rescue operations conducted by the administration during the flood situation. He also noted that heavy rainfall in the dam area contributed to the flooding and that future river improvement projects would incorporate flood protection measures to mitigate such risks.
The meeting also addressed the issue of vehicle damage caused by the floods. The Chief Minister acknowledged that, under current rules, no compensation is being paid for vehicle damages. He instructed the Pune Municipal Commissioner and District Collector to explore solutions with insurance companies and to provide immediate compensation to the affected vehicle owners.
Shinde also emphasised the need to support flood-affected citizens with essential supplies. He noted that various organisations are assisting, but directed the district collectors to ensure that sufficient food grains are provided to the poor citizens of flood-affected areas such as Ekta Nagar and Sinhagad.
During the meeting, Shinde spoke directly with Pune Collector Dr. Suhas Diwase, providing necessary instructions to expedite relief measures. The meeting was attended by MNS office bearers, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Vikas Kharge, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Brijesh Singh, and other senior officials.
