Pune: Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar resolves to solve traffic issues in New Year, police to use radar-based technology

Pune: The Puneites will have a traffic congestion-free New Year. The police have taken steps in the direction while Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar has resolved to focus on solving traffic issues in 2025.

Traffic signals at all major chowks in the city will be streamlined. A proposal in this regard has been sent to the State Government. Hi-tech radar-based technology will be used to solve traffic problems. There are 1,500 CCTV cameras in the city. As many as 2,800 CCTV cameras will be installed across Pune to keep a watch on undisciplined commuters.

Addressing a press meet, CP Amitesh Kumar said, “Radar-based technology will be used to solve traffic issues. We have coordinated with technologists to use the technology. It will help us to know the exact condition of traffic in a particular area. The police will come to know the speed of traffic, whether traffic is smooth or not in various city parts. This will help them to decongest the areas.”

The police will particularly look into traffic management in the city. They will concentrate on solving congestion at various places. CP Kumar said, “The police will take measures to solve traffic congestion in the city. Chronic snarl spots will be identified. Traffic signals at major chowks will be streamlined. Efforts will be made to make travel safe for the Puneites by smoothening traffic.

“The city is expanding. A plan has been chalked out to streamline all signals in the city. A proposal has been sent to the State Government. It will be approved soon. Currently, the city has 1,500 CCTV cameras. 2,800 more hi-tech cameras will be set up. Major chowks, roads and their bylanes have been identified for congestion. The police will coordinate with various agencies to decongest these areas.

“The police will coordinate with the PMC, the PMRDA and MahaMetro officials and will streamline traffic. Our priority in the future will be to address traffic jams and related issues.

“The number of fatal road accidents has increased. However, comparing statistics for the past two-three years, the rate of such accidents has reduced by 20-25 pc.

Close watch on criminals held under MCOCA

The police took action against criminal syndicates under the MCOCA in the past few years. As many as 700 such history-sheeters got bail and came out of jail. Some are trying to get bail. Action has also been taken under the MPDA Act. Goons put into jail under preventive detention are out on bail.

“The police have kept a close watch on those disturbing law and order and criminals involved in serious crimes. Preventive action will be taken against them and they will be warned. Minors’ involvement in crime is a matter of concern. Instructions have been issued to police officers at the police station level to counsel them and to speak to their parents. Statistics in the past two-three years indicate that serious crimes such as murder and attempt to murder were reduced in the city. Serious offences decreased after the police acted against goons.”
