Pune: Drunk driving may result in cancellation of licence now
Pune: The Pune Police have taken a big decision in the backdrop of a rising number of accidents in the city. Drunk driving is likely to result in the cancellation of licence. The police have sent a proposal to the court in this regard.
The number of accidents involving drunk driving has increased. Despite action or penalty, there has been no letup in them. People continue to drive under the influence of alcohol. Taking serious note of this, the Pune Police have taken this important step. They have sent a proposal to the court to allow them to cancel the driving licence of the violator in drunk driving cases.
Many serious accidents took place in the recent past in the city. It has come to the fore that many of these accidents happened due to drivers’ inebriated state. The minor in the hit-and-run case in Kalyani Nagar was drunk when he hit the two bike-borne IT engineers, who died in the accident. The police have become more alert now. It remains to be seen whether their proposal would be accepted by the court.
A drunk driver recently dashed two beat marshals on the old Pune-Mumbai highway. One of them died on the spot. But the driver went home and slept calmly. This underlines that such people have become bold now. Therefore, there has been a demand for strict action against drunk driving.
In the first instance of drunk driving, the violator has to pay a Rs 10,000 fine. In the second instance, the fine is Rs 20,000. In some cases, the offender is sent to jail too.
