Pune: FDA acts against blood banks; 29 licences suspended, one cancelled

Pune: The State Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cancelled the licence of a blood bank and has suspended licences of 29 other blood banks for sending blood to other states when there was a shortage of blood in Maharashtra and for violating various rules.
The FDA has sent show-cause notices to 32 blood banks while action is pending against three.
The FDA conducted checks at blood banks within the division comprising Pune, Solapur, Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur districts. The FDA conducted a special drive during April-November, during which action was taken against blood banks not following the rules. A blood bank has been told to issue clarification by the Joint Inspection Squad.
The joint inspection was carried out after sending details collected during the drive to Delhi-based National Blood Transfusion Council and the Department of Drugs Control. The squad comprised the Drug Inspector (Pune Division), Central Drug Inspector and District General Hospital Doctor.
