Discussion on the flood situation in the State Assembly, time-bound programme to be implemented to avoid floods

Pune: State Minister Uday Samant promised, in the State Assembly, that a survey will be conducted in the flood-affected areas in Vadgaon Sheri, Dhanori, Lohegaon and Yerwada. Flood-affected residents fulfilling the criteria will get assistance from the civic body. Directives will be issued to the Municipal Commissioner in this regard.

Moreover, the civic body will be instructed to implement a time-bound programme to avoid usual floods, said Samant.

A calling attention notice raised by Vadgaon Sheri NCP (AP) MLA Sunil Tingre about the heavy rains in the city, including in his constituency. Speaking on the issue, Tingre said, “Floods have been taking place in Pune for the past five-six years. Areas in the Vadgaon Sheri assembly such as Vighnaharta, Sai Park in Dhanori, Ganga Kunj in Kalas, Laxmi Nagar, Yashwant Nagar in Yerwada, Inorbit Mall, Gardenia, Shubham, Anand Park in Vadgaon Sheri, Rakshak Nagar in Nagpur Chawl at Sainikwadi, Dadachi Vasti in Lohegaon, Lunkad Amazon and Tuljabhavani Nagar in Viman Nagar were inundated in the first week of June after a heavy rainfall. This has been happening every year during the monsoon.

“Flood water enters homes of poor residents and household items, furniture and school material get damaged. The civic body spends crores of rupees every year on cleaning nullahs. Still storm water drains remain choked during the rainy season. This affects poor people. Therefore, the state government should survey such areas and compensate the affected poor residents. A time-bound programme needs to be implemented to check frequent floods.”

Replying to this, Minister Samant said, “A survey of affected societies and houses will be conducted in the Vadgaon Sheri Assembly constituency. Those fulfilling the criteria will get assistance. The Municipal Commissioner will be directed to hold a meeting with MLA Tingre and to take immediate measures to avoid floods.”

Allegations by Tingre

MLA Tingre alleged that nullahs have been diverted or buried at many places in the assembly. Floods are a result of such activities by builders helped by the civic body. He demanded that details should be provided about how many nullahs were buried and diverted in the past five years.
