Pune: Green colour made mandatory for tankers carrying STP water
Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has made it mandatory for construction sites to use treated water from sewage treatment plants (STPs). It has also been made mandatory to paint tankers transporting STP water green to bring to the notice of citizens.
It has been instructed to write on such tankers: STP water, not for drinking purpose. Only those tankers painted green will be given treated water, said Water Supply Department Head Nandkishor Jagtap.
In a shocking incident, a private water tanker supplied STP water to Nyati Elysia housing society in Kharadi. The incident rattled the PMC because contractors were directed to use separate tankers to transport STP water.
In this backdrop, instructions have been issued to paint STP water tankers green. Civic staffers have been directed to fill only green tankers with STP water. This decision will be conveyed to all housing societies in the city, said Jagtap.
The police have decided to register an offence against the contractor, who supplied STP water to the housing society in Kharadi. The police enquired with the civic administration which sections they expected to evoke against the accused.
The Legal Department of the PMC conveyed to the Kharadi Police that the contractor should be booked under endangering public health and other sections. The process of registering an offence has started, said the civic administration.
Municipal Commissioner Dr Rajendra Bhosale said, “The PMC has received a complaint that STP water was supplied to housing societies. We are verifying the complaint. The quality of water supplied to the housing society will be tested. Instructions have been issued to monitor contractors supplying water.”
