Pune: Historic Hasbanis Bakhal Ganeshotsav Mandal to Celebrate 131st Year with Grand Gajmahal Decor by Muslim Artist This Year
Pune: The Hasbanis Bakhal Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal, famously recognised as the “Seventh Ganesha idol installed by freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak,” is set to mark its 131st year with an impressive celebration. This year, the mandal will feature a grand Gajmahal as part of its Ganeshotsav decorations, a structure being crafted by Muslim artist Salman Shaikh.
Shaikh, currently working from Ambegaon, is leading the creation of the Gajmahal, which spans 40 by 20 feet and rises to a height of 20 feet. He is overseeing a team of 15 students from Abhinav College who are assisting in the construction. Despite facing challenges, Shaikh has built a successful career after studying at Abhinav College and has been involved in the decoration work for various Ganesh Mandals over the past four years.
The Hasbanis Bakhal Mandal holds a unique place in history, having been established in 1894 under the inspiration of the freedom movement. It was formed in Shaniwar Peth, a key centre for gathering during the independence struggle. The initiative to establish the mandal was led by Mamasaheb Hasbanis, with the first Ganeshotsav being organised by Laxmanrao Jawle and Lokmanya Tilak.
Ranjit Dhage Patil, the president of the Hasbanis Bakhal Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal, emphasised the inclusive spirit of the festival. “Ganeshotsav is a celebration for everyone in society. Muslim devotees of Ganesha also participate in the festival and contribute their services. Lokmanya Tilak initiated Ganeshotsav to unite the community, and in keeping with that ideology, Hasbanis Bakhal Mandal continues to uphold its distinct identity in Pune’s Ganeshotsav,” he said.
