Pune: A landslide took place in the Sinhagad Ghat at midnight on Tuesday. A major tragedy was averted as there was no traffic on the road at the odd hours. The road has been closed to traffic. The debris would be cleared for traffic by the afternoon or early evening on Tuesday.

The landslide took place a kilometre away from the main parking of Sinhagad Fort at Batata Point.

It is raining incessantly in the Sinhagad Fort area. There is a danger of landslides in the area. The place where the landslide happened is a landslide-prone spot on the way to Sinhagad Fort. It was raining very heavily on Monday night in the Sinhagad Fort area.

People travelling via the Ghat section saw the landslide early in the morning. They immediately alerted the Forest Department and the administration. Officials reached the spot and the Forest Management Committee started clearing the debris.

Earlier incidents at the same spot

During the rainy season, landslides are common. Hence, some spots have been identified as landslide-prone in the area. Recently, landslides took place at the foothills of the fort and on the main road. Therefore, instructions were issued to observe caution while visiting the fort.

Heavy rainfall in Ghat sections in Pune

Though the rain activity has weakened in the city, heavy rains continue in Ghat sections around Pune. Sinhagad Fort is a popular destination, where people gather to enjoy the rainy season. The Forest Department and the Forest Management Committee have issued instructions while visiting the place.
