Pune Municipal Corporation acts against citizens littering public places, Rs 60 lakh fine recovered in one month
Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been acting against people throwing garbage at public places. The Solid Waste Management Department took action within limits of various ward offices against 9,19,258 violators and recovered fines amounting to Rs 60,29,980 in January 2025. The Kondhwa-Yevalewadi Ward Office recovered Rs 9,19,258 fine.
Fines were recovered for personal dog barking at public places, burning garbage, handing over garbage without segregation, use of plastic bags, biomedical waste, littering by animals and feeding pigeons and doves in the open.
Earlier, the ward offices had the responsibility to levy fines on violators. However, they could not effectively act against violators as they had daily responsibilities of garbage collection and cleanliness. Therefore, the PMC set up patrolling squads on the lines of the Indore civic body. These squads are actively taking action now.
Out of the total fine levied, Rs 32,82,210 was collected for littering at public spaces, Rs 7,05,650 for debris dumping, Rs 2,23,000 for spitting in public places while Rs 1,79,140 was recovered for non-segregation of garbage.
Solid Waste Management Department Deputy Municipal Commissioner Sandeep Kadam said, “Penalised action is being taken against those who litter public places. Awareness is also being spread about the issue. We will intensify the drive against violators.”
