Pune:

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken a big step to recover the remaining arrears from property holders. In the campaign launched to recover property tax arrears from property holders, the PMC has attached 2,500 properties so far. Significantly, the PMC has decided to auction 2,000 properties out of these to recover its money.

The administration of the PMC has started the process of the ‘Mega Auction’ for this, and the auction is likely to take place in the next month.

The Municipal Corporation’s budget has given a target of Rs 2,700 crore to the Property Tax Department. Out of this, Rs 1,850 crore has been collected so far. With three months left until the end of the financial year, the Property Tax Department faces the daunting challenge of collecting another Rs 850 crore.

Further, the stay order given by the state government to collect property tax of 32 newly included villages will result in another loss of about 300 crores to the PMC. Against that backdrop, the property tax department has focused on collecting arrears from other property holders.

Since December 2, the Municipal Corporation has started collecting arrears by playing the band in front of defaulted property holders. Through this, it has collected arrears of Rs 52 crore 25 lakhs from about 449 property owners.

The Chief Deputy Commissioner of the Property Tax Department of the Pune Municipal Corporation, Madhav Jagtap, said, “Around 2,500 properties have been attached by the PMC so far, and if the property owners do not pay taxes on time, those properties will be auctioned. For this, the process of evaluating the properties is underway.”
