Pune:

In a bid to make the city’s ambitious River Improvement Scheme a success, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has implemented a series of stringent measures aimed at preventing untreated wastewater from entering city rivers. Additional Municipal Commissioner Prithviraj B.P. has emphasised that water from drainage lines adjacent to city drains must not flow into the river through damaged chambers. For this, the PMC has adopted a specialised process to ensure that these drainage lines remain operational and intact.

A meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Additional Commissioner of the Drainage Department in the Municipal Corporation on Friday regarding waste water management in the city. During the discussion, the corporation prioritised immediate repairs to drainage lines running adjacent to the city’s drains. It was decided to initiate a structured plan for the frequent cleaning of chambers along these drainage lines, aiming to reduce overflow and blockages.

Following a recent drone survey of the city’s drainage lines, several chambers were found to be damaged, which has led to sewage water flowing back into the river via the drains. In light of these findings, the PMC resolved in the meeting to adopt a dedicated approach for repairing drainage lines and chambers along the city’s drainage network.

Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P. specified that a decision was also made to prioritise the regular cleaning of major drainage lines in the city, focusing on frequently overflowing lines and chambers that could potentially pollute the river.

“The River Improvement Scheme is designed to treat all sewage produced in the city before it is discharged into the river,” explained Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P. He also said that it is crucial that the water from drainage lines running alongside city drains does not enter the drainage system unfiltered.
