Pune: New Year celebrations! RTO, police to take action against drunk driving

Pune: The Regional Transport Office (RTO), Pune, has launched a drive against drunk driving in the city ahead of New Year celebrations. Special squads have been deployed at various places in the city from December 25 to 31. The RTO has also sought the help of the Pune Police.
People celebrate Christmas and also welcome New Year by partying. They consume liquor during such parties and drive vehicles. This causes accidents and congestion. To curb such behaviour, the drive is being conducted, said Deputy RTO Swapnil Bhosale.
The drive is being conducted across the city. Nakabandi operations are being conducted by raising barricades at busy chowks and at important public places. RTO squads are conducting a breathalyzer test of drivers. Documents such as driving licence, vehicle registration papers are being checked. If a driver or vehicle rider is found drunk, legal action is being taken, said Bhosale.
Minors riding two-wheelers are also made to undergo the test. Therefore, parents have been told not to allow their children to use vehicles. Do not get drunk and drive, carry all vehicle documents and follow rules, said Bhosale.
Bhosale said, “Restaurants, bars and pubs are allowed to operate till late night on the eve of New Year. Parties are organised at open grounds and special venues. Liquor shops are allowed to operate till 1 am while celebrations can go on till 5 am. In this backdrop, there are possibilities of people getting drunk and driving, which could cause accidents. Therefore, nakabandi operations will be conducted across the city.”
