Pune: Observe caution while gorging on Diwali sweets
Pune: One tends to eat sweets frequently during the Diwali festivities on visits to friends and relatives. However, according to dieticians, one needs to observe caution while eating sweets as they can spike blood sugar levels and can increase blood pressure as well.
Some reasons behind increased sugar levels during Diwali include eating sweets, along with ‘Diwali Faral’. One tends to be liberal while consuming sweets on the pretext of festivities. Fried food and sweets spike blood sugar levels. Moreover, physical movements also slow down due to vacations. This proves a perfect recipe for increased blood pressure.
Those who are diabetic and have a high blood pressure have to be more careful due to the dangers involved. A city-based dietician said, “Prohibitive care should be taken by pre-diabetics and diabetics during Diwali. They should maintain a healthy level of blood sugar. They should consume sweets moderately. They should eat protein-rich food, along with sweets. This balances the diet and the sugar level is maintained.
“Physical movements slow down due to vacations. Therefore, one must exercise daily during Diwali. Sugar level does not shoot suddenly. Therefore, efforts should be made to maintain it. Do not avoid exercises after eating fried food and sweets. Sugar-free items are also available in the market. But they should also be consumed in restricted quantities. They also have adverse effects on our health.”
