Pune: Omkareshwar Temple Robbed in Midnight Heist, Thief Escapes with Donation Money

A shocking incident has come to light in Pune city, where the theft broke the door of the historic Omkareshwar temple and stole the money from the donation box. The identity of the thief has not yet been revealed, as he wore a mask while committing the crime.
In this regard, Kaustubh Ulhas Gade (age 40, a resident of Shaniwar Peth, next to Omkareshwar temple) has filed a complaint at Vishrambaug police station. This incident took place on October 6, around 2.30 am to 3.00 am.
Omkareshwar Temple is a Peshwa-era temple. The history of this temple is about 284 years old. It is believed that this temple was built by Krishnaji Pant Chitrav during the Maratha Empire on the orders of his spiritual guru Shivaram Bhat. There is a huge crowd of devotees in this temple on Mahashivratri and on Shravani Somvar.
Omkareshwar Temple has two main entrances. As per the police information, the thief entered the temple by breaking the lock of the riverside door. He then entered the sanctum sanctorum and broke the lock of the donation box there. He then went on to steal about 6 thousand rupees from the donation box.
The theft was noticed after the temple was opened at six in the morning. After getting information about the incident, Police Inspector Ghodke, Assistant Police Inspector Pawar, and Gaikwad visited the temple and inspected it.
It is learnt that the thief is seen in the CCTV footage of the temple. However, his identity has not yet been confirmed, as he has covered his entire face with a mask. The CCTV footage shows that the theft may have taken place between 2:30 am and 3:00 am. The police have seized the CCTV footage, and Police Sub-Inspector Patil is investigating further in this case.
