Pune: One more doctor from Sassoon Hospital suspended for abandoning destitute patient at midnight

Pune: One more doctor from the Sassoon General Hospital was suspended for abandoning a destitute patient without discharge in the Mental Hospital area in Yerawada last week. A resident doctor has already been suspended in the case.

Hospital Dean Dr Eknath Pawar took action after it was revealed in the probe committee report that the doctor helped the already suspended doctor. The 32-year-old destitute patient from the Orthopaedics Department was abandoned at midnight on July 22. Junior Resident Doctor Adi Kumar was immediately suspended after the incident.

The Dean formed a committee to probe the incident. After receiving its report, another junior resident doctor from the first year from the Orthopaedic Department has been suspended till further orders. The BJ Medical College has also recommended rusticating both resident doctors for a term from the college and the hostel.

CCTV footage revealed that the patient was led out of the building with the doctors. No other staffer, including nurses, were involved in this. Department Head Dr Girish Bartakke replied to the show-cause notice saying he was unaware about the incident. The report stated that he was also not involved in the case.

“According to the report submitted by the internal committee, it was found that one more junior resident doctor had helped abandon the destitute patient. He has been suspended from the hospital and also from all educational programmes till further orders. Both the doctors have been rusticated from the college and the hostel for one term. A report, in this regard, has been sent to the Director and Commissioner of the State Medical Education Department,”
