Pune: PMC Intensifies Property Tax Recovery Drive, Recovers Rs 40.68 Crore of Arrears in 18 Days

Pune:
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched a vigorous campaign to recover long-pending property tax arrears from defaulters. Over the past 18 days, the PMC has seized 75 properties while successfully recovering a staggering Rs 40.68 crore from 317 property owners.
The PMC’s Property Tax Department faces the daunting task of meeting its ambitious revenue target set in the annual budget. The Property Tax Department needs to meet a significant gap of Rs 900 crore within the remaining three months of the financial year to meet its target.
In a bid to expedite recovery, the corporation has implemented aggressive measures, including the tactic of playing bands at the doorsteps of defaulters. Additionally, the department has begun seizing properties within the jurisdiction of its 15 regional offices. This drive has seen 75 properties locked and sealed, sending a strong message to tax defaulters.
Deputy Commissioner of the Property Tax Department, Madhav Jagtap, revealed that tax arrears amounting to Rs 40.68 crore have been retrieved from 317 defaulters during the campaign. He also stated that tax bills for the current financial year were issued to approximately 14.8 lakh property owners in the city. Among them, 8.84 lakh property owners have so far paid Rs 1,841 crore in taxes.
However, the remaining six lakh property owners have yet to clear their dues, prompting the PMC to escalate its recovery efforts. “We appeal to citizens to pay their outstanding taxes promptly and cooperate with the Municipal Corporation to avoid the embarrassment of such punitive actions,” Jagtap urged.
