Pune: PMPML to install CCTV cameras in 1,000 buses for passengers’ safety
Pune: There has been an increase in cases of eve-teasing and thefts in PMPML buses. A woman thrashed a man for eve-teasing her recently on board a bus travelling from Swargate to Wakdewadi.
In this backdrop, the PMPML administration decided to install CCTV cameras in buses plying in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad for passengers’ safety. In the first phase, three CCTV cameras each will be installed in 1,006 buses belonging to the PMPML. A tender process is underway for the purpose. CCTV cameras will be fitted in the buses within two months. It will be easier to keep a watch on passengers as the cameras are of superior quality.
There are 2,100 buses in the PMPML fleet. However, only 1,650 buses ply. As many as 1,006 buses belong to PMPML. The remaining buses have been taken on lease. The administration is installing CCTV cameras for the first time in its buses. Around 13 lakh passengers travel by PMPML buses daily. Cameras will be fixed in 1,006 buses in a phased manner, which will bring at least 9 lakh passengers within the CCTV surveillance.
PMPML Joint Managing Director Nitin Narvekar said, “We have decided to install CCTV cameras in our buses. The tender process is underway. The cameras will be installed within two months.”
