Gives a new lease of life to army jawan and four others

Pune: Pune-based ‘Policenama’ news portal’s Senior Reporter Prasad Gajanan Gosavi passed away on Sunday (September 1). He was being treated in a private hospital in Nigdi after a serious accident two months ago.

When we thought that he would defeat death, he breathed his last. His organs have been donated. Prasad has become the first journalist after this laudable decision.

A few hours after his death, his heart was transplanted to an army jawan. Therefore, Prasad’s fight with death may have been unsuccessful, but his heart is still beating. Besides the heart, his lungs, liver, a kidney and two eyes have been donated. Thus, five patients have got a new lease of life.

Prasad Gosavi met with an accident while returning home from his office near the Khadki Railway Station. He was undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Nigdi. His brain and a leg were seriously injured in the accident. Doctors were trying their best to save his life. His right leg had to be removed after it lost sensation. The doctors had the challenge to save his life. Then his health started improving but suddenly, he suffered brain hemorrhage and lost consciousness. The doctors tried their best but he was not responding to treatment. Finally, they declared him brain dead. His family faced grief. But they decided to donate his eyes, heart, lungs, liver and a kidney.

A green corridor was set up to transport Prasad’s heart from Pimpri to Pune. The Police and the Army men ensured a smooth transport of the vital organ. All doctors and staff at the DY Patil Hospital saluted Prasad. Within hours, his heart was successfully transplanted to an Army jawan at the Southern Command Hospital in Pune. His body was handed over to the family after the organ donation. His last remains were consigned to flames at the Nigdi crematorium.

Though Prasad is no more with us but his heart is still beating. Someone will be able to see this world with his eyes. The patients concerned will get his liver, lungs and kidney and a new life. Prasad Gosavi will be remembered forever as the first journalist to donate his organs after death.
