Pune: Pune has the dubious distinction of being among the top three cities with frequent traffic jams. To solve the issue, an outer Ring Road around Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad will be built. Its work will begin in the second week of February. The MSRDC will construct the 170-km long, six-lane road by June 2027 by spending Rs 42,000 crore.
Heavy vehicles coming from Nashik, Ahilya Nagar, Solapur and Satara and going towards Mumbai and vice versa will take the Ring Road. This is likely to drastically reduce the number of heavy vehicles entering the two cities. The Katraj-Dehu Road bypass will be used by vehicles within the city. Public transport will be strengthened as the Metro and BRTS routes will be built along the bypass.
The Ring Road is divided in two parts. The western part is 69 km long while the eastern part is 101 km long. These two parts have been further divided into 12 parts, for which 12 tenders have been passed and 12 work orders have been released. All work will be started simultaneously. In all, 99 pc land acquisition for the western part and 86 pc for the eastern part has been done. At 15 places, tunnels will be made through hills. Big bridges will be built over Khadakwasla Dam and main roads to move ahead smoothly on the Ring Road.
Traffic coming from Satara will take a left turn at Khed Shivapur. A big tunnel will be built through the mountain beyond Sinhagad fort. Traffic will then pass over a bridge built on the backwaters of Khadakwasla Dam. Later, they will take the road near the Hinjawadi IT Park and cross Paud Road. Going through rural areas, traffic will pass via the road behind Kusgaon Dam and reach Pune-Mumbai Highway at Urse and travel towards Mumbai. This road is 7-8 km longer than the Expressway. But heavy vehicles will travel smoothly on the Ring Road.
Traffic going towards the eastern part will cross the Saswad-Bopdev Road, Pandharpur Road. They will take the road near the proposed Purandar Airport to go to Solapur Road. Then the Ring Road will be connected to Ahmednagar Road through rural areas. Further, the road will go beyond Alandi and connect to Nashik Road near the PCMC. Vehicles bound for the Talegaon, Chakan and Shikrapur industrial belt will have an easy travel. From Nashik Road, it will pass from outside PCMC and Dehu Road Cantonment limits to Pune-Mumbai Road. Vehicles going towards Mumbai via Solapur, Ahilya Nagar, Nashik roads will not have to go through the municipal limits of both civic bodies, thus saving the hassle of congestion. The eastern part will be convenient for traffic coming via these four highways to reach adjacent districts.
MSRDC Superintending Engineer Rahul Vasaikar said, “Work on the Ring Road will start in the second week of February. The 170-km long road will be completed in June 2027. An expenditure of Rs 42,000 crore is estimated. The western and eastern parts will be built simultaneously. The western part is 69 km long while the eastern one has a length of 101 km.”
District Collector Jitendra Dudi said, “Land acquisition for the Ring Road will be over by March 2025. In all, 99 pc land has been acquired for the western part while it is 86 pc over for the eastern part. The main road will have six lanes and service roads will be built.”
