Pune : In the brutal murder case of the government contractor Vitthal Sakharam Polekar, the Pune rural police have taken action against gang leader Yogesh Bhame and his gang under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).

The accused who are booked under the MCOCA act in this case have been identified as Yogesh, alias Babu Kisan Bhame (age 32), Rohit, alias Bala Kisan Bhame (age 22, both residents of Donje, Taluka Haveli), Milind Devidas Thorat (age 24, a resident of Wagholi, Taluka Haveli, native of Belgaon, Taluka Karjat, District Ahilyanagar), Shubham Popat Sonawane (age 24, a resident of Wagholi, native of Khalwadi, Chincholi Gurav, Taluka Sangamner, District Ahilyanagar), and Ramdas Damodar Polekar (age 32, a resident of Polekarwadi, Donje, Taluka Haveli).

This gang has dominance in the Khadakwasla, Donje and Sinhagad Road areas. To increase the gang’s dominance in the area, the gang demanded a ransom of Rs 2 crore from contractor Vitthal Polekar to not interfere with the road work he was doing. As Polekar refused to give a ransom demanded by the gang, the gang members, including gang leader Yogesh Bhame, kidnapped Polekar while he was out for a morning walk and murdered him.

Shockingly, the accused then cut his body into pieces and threw it into the backwaters of Khadakwasla dam to destroy any evidence in this regard. Meanwhile, the Haveli Police and the team of Local Crime Branch investigated the case and arrested the accused.

Since it was necessary to curb the increasing criminal activities of this gang, the Haveli police, under the guidance of Superintendent of Police Pankaj Deshmukh and Additional Superintendent of Police Ramesh Chopde, sent a proposal to Special Inspector General of Police Sunil Phulari to take action against this gang under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCCA). Accordingly, the Special IG of Police verified the proposal and ordered to take action against gang members under the MCOCA.

Further investigation is being conducted by Sub-Divisional Police Officer Sunil Kumar Pujari.
