Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) penalises those who cause unhygienic conditions in the city. The PMC Solid Waste Management Department took action against 52,405 citizens for dumping garbage at public places.

Fines amounting to over Rs 3.28 crore were imposed on them. This is the highest number of fines and the biggest penalty recovery in the past three years.

The department identified 923 chronic garbage dumping spots in the city. Various measures are being implemented to reduce the number of the chronic spots. Heaps of garbage can still be seen in many parts the city due to manpower shortage, non-segregation of solid waste by citizens and issues in garbage collection.

As many as 18 squads are deployed by the PMC to penalise citizens dumping garbage in open spaces. The squads have separate vehicles and they go around the city during the day. They recover penalties from erring citizens in a big way. The highest number of actions is taken against people who dump garbage at public places while many citizens do not segregate garbage.
