Pune: Ujani Dam Water Levels Surge Due to Heavy Rains
Pune / Indapur: After reaching historically low levels during this year’s drought, Ujani Dam is experiencing a rapid rise in water levels due to heavy rainfall in Pune and surrounding areas. As of Friday, July 26, water is entering the dam at over 1,44,000 cusecs, likely pushing the dam from dead storage to live storage.
This surge has brought relief to farmers in Pune, Solapur, and Ahmednagar districts. Currently, 1,44,149 cusecs of water are being discharged into Ujani Dam from Daund, moving it toward live storage. The dam, with a dead storage capacity of 63.66 TMC and live storage capacity of 53 TMC, is expected to start filling its live reservoir soon.
- Current Status (as of July 26, 2024, 6 AM):
- Total Water Storage: 62.21 TMC
- Live Water Storage: -1.26 TMC
- Discharge from Daund: 1,44,149 cusecs
- Background and Future Outlook
Ujani Dam’s storage last year was at 60.66% capacity. However, due to water releases ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the dam’s levels significantly dropped. Recent rains since June 1 have started replenishing the dam, and it is now poised to transition from dead to live storage, marking a positive turnaround for the region’s water security and agriculture.
Capacity Details:
- Full Capacity: 117 TMC (100% filling), 123 TMC (111% filling)
- Dead Storage: 63.65 TMC
- Usable Water Storage: 53.34 TMC
The continuous inflow suggests that Ujani Dam will soon be back to adequate levels, ensuring water availability for the upcoming agricultural season and alleviating concerns of water scarcity in the region.
