Pune: Vehicles going in wrong direction will now be impounded, police act against 14,000 vehicles
Pune: The Traffic Police try to discipline commuters by slapping fines for various traffic violations. However, they continue to break traffic rules.
Now, the Traffic Police have decided to take stringent action against those who travel in a wrong direction by impounding erring vehicles for six months. The Traffic Department has launched a drive against commuters for riding triple-seat on a two-wheeler, drunken driving and travelling in the wrong direction.
The Traffic Department has acted against 25,000 vehicles in the past 15 days for these violations. As many as 850 Traffic Police personnel work in two shifts in the city. In spite of their efforts, traffic congestion is witnessed daily across the city due to indiscipline among commuters, bad roads and narrow roads.
The rate of road accidents has gone up sharply in the country due to reckless driving and various other traffic violations. Fatal accidents have increased in the city. Numerous victims receive serious injuries while many others escape with minor injuries. Therefore, strict action will be taken against undisciplined commuters, said Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar.
Ban on heavy vehicles during daytime
Building construction and development work is underway in many city parts. Therefore, dumpers, concrete mixer containers and such other heavy vehicles can be seen on the city roads during the day. These vehicles are found to be involved in accidents. Therefore, heavy vehicles have been banned from commuting during peak hours in the morning and in the evening.
Action taken by the Traffic Department from October 1 to 16
*Number of vehicles travelling in the wrong direction: 21,285
*Riding triple-seat on a two-wheeler: 2,872
*Drunken driving: 570
*Impounded vehicles: 215
